The weather this weekend has been as close to perfect as I've ever seen in Portland. Amazing fall days that are warm yet crisp.

Yesterday we decided to check out the Cornfield MAiZE at Sauvie Island. It turned out the rest of the state of Oregon had the same idea. An hour to get out there and TWO PLUS HOURS to get off the island. The worst traffic jam I have ever been involved in. Left at 2:30pm and got home at 10pm.

My wife took some great photos between the time spent sitting in the car. And that was pretty fun. Take at look at the photos here.

Shaun Of The Dead was great and Spaced is one of my all time favortie TV shows...so I can't wait for Hot Fuzz to hit theaters. The teaser trailers have been posted.

I've been busy with work, trips to Northern California, house guests, getting my office set up and a single test drive. I guess it's nice to be busy, but I do miss the slower pace. In any case...onward.

I did get a chance to see the fantastic documentary film Who Killed The Electric Car? It's the amazing story of electric cars in the US focusing on the GM/Saturn EV1 electric car. A friend of mine had one of these cars and I am lucky enough to have had the opportunity to drive it. Man, what a car. The pick up was insane, the design was great and it was so easy to charge. The film reviews the history of the car and investigates why they were then taken off the market and destroyed by GM. It's coming out on DVD soon and worth a rent.

In addition, here's what GM had to say about their use of the technology developed from the EV1. Yeah, well GM still sucks. I'll never buy an American car. And check out the original one sheet poster for the film.

Speaking of documentary films, Food Fight will be presenting FREE screenings of Earthlings on November 2nd and Behind The Mask on November 16th. Both at the Hollywood Theater in Portland. Make a note of it.

There are a lot of stupid people out there
pushing religion on the masses, but there's something special about Stephen Baldwin and those like him.

This is a great article from Salon about Baldwin and his new book, The Unusual Suspect. It points out just how truly foolish (not knowing the Ten Commandments?) and hateful (efforts to end global poverty and violence are just the sort of "stupid arrogance" that incur God's wrath) Baldwin really is.

What's really awful to me is 'Stevie B' using skateboarding and 'extreme' lifestyles to suck kids into his religious and political bullshit. I would think kids would be smart enough to put the pieces together. Figure out that this washed up actor turned druggie is only using a current trend to get them involved with his way of thinking. If it was another sport that was more popular with outsider kids that would be his tool. He doesn't give two shits about skateboarding. He never skated. And just like other pieces of trash like Ryan Dobson and Jay Bakker, Baldwin fakes his new hip/alternative skate stance just to recruit young white males. 'Check out my earrings and killer tats dude, and by the way...gays are evil, abortion is murder and George Bush is always right'

Yes, Baldwin is a 'cultural advisor' to President Bush. Why am I not surprised?

There have always been people using youth culture to sell their religion but I thought that skaters would be smarter than that. That's why I'm most bummed by the pro skateboarders who support Stephen Baldwin and his message. Christian Hosoi fits the profile. He was a drug addict. Now Jesus is his drug. A criminal who has now turned to God for a fix and validation of his crimes...understood. But Ray Barbee and Lance Mountain?! Yeah, I know you go to church...fine. Glad it works for you. But being part of an evangelical skate film? Really? You support using skateboarding to push Baldwin's radical right message? I guess I gave you guys too much credit.

- Yes, I've got the new Converge. Yes, I like it a lot.

It's hard for me to even give a 'review' of a Converge record at this point. They are one of my favorite bands of all time...could be my all time favorite. Like number-one-on-the-list-favorite. Regardless, this album is fucking great. It's been said in every review in the last few years, but they really are the band that everyone follows. I'm proud to say that before metalcore was on Mtv, all teenagers had tattoos and there was a bandwagon I was a fan.

If you like Converge, this album will not disappoint.

- If I had a spare 20K lying around I would be buying this car TODAY. If fact, if anyone has an idea of how I could gather a quick 20K I'm all ears. Need some really quick, expensive design work done? Come on...

- Is It Really So Strange was pretty much a let down. I was hoping for some interesting interviews or at least some decent Sweet & Tender Hooligans footage. Nope. It was over an hour of standard Morrissey facts told to you by boring fans that seemed to know less than I do. And that's not saying much. Boring really. I could gather more interesting people to talk about Moz.

The show last night was loud. Holy shit was it loud. I'm very thankful for ear plugs.

Yes, it's not very metal of me, but I wasn't familiar with Celtic Frost enough to truly enjoy them. They did put on a pretty good show. I was hoping for more leather and spikes and less wool hats and pea coats but I suppose people get older, looks change and hair is lost.

1349 were OK. Yes, they rocked the corpse paint but they had a pretty terrible sound mix and that fat guy on the drums certainly wasn't Frost.

And past the music the reason I like black metal so much is just the whole image package. The evil logos, the anti-society evil hate filled force and being SO undergound you dismiss popularity in every way. The church burnings. The satanism. The complete story. These bands should barely be human. The same reason I liked KISS as a kid. For example, I like Xasthur more because I'll never see a person but just the evil photos, the incredible music and that logo. That being said, here are some flaws in 1349 (or any true grim black metal band) putting on a live show:

1. Throwing the horns - Yes, it's metal...but for goodness sake EVERYONE holds up the horns these days. Once it's been done by Kid Rock and Avril Fucking Lavigne it's lost all credibility. It's certainly not at all evil anymore. Someone needs to kill that crap completely.

2. Audience Interaction - These guys are dressed as corpses...surely they shouldn't be going into the crowd and shaking hands with people?! They hate people, they hate their fans. They hate everything and everyone. WTF?!

3. A Light Show - Unless the lighting is provided by fire in chamber pots on either side of the stage OR are burning torches carried out in mock battle...forget it.

4. Hand clapping - Similar to number one. This is the most terrible and gut wrenching music on the planet...let's all start a little clapping rally! Not very grim at all.

5. Drinking water, taking breaks, using towells, acting human, etc. - This one was brought up by Chad and I agree completely. Let's face it, you don't see the characters at Disneyland break the wall. I expect the same from black metal. You're an inhuman hell spawn we all fear...but you need to take a drink of water due to the heat and cool off? How non-demon of you.

I'm going to take a break from black metal for a bit...or at least until I get the new Xasthur in the mail.

- Fall is my favorite season hands down. It's nice to really feel it here in the Pacific Northwest. I'm not looking forward to the rain, but it is nice and crisp outside and it feels nice.

- And speaking of cold and crisp...in preperation for the 1349 show tonight I've been listening to some very black metal. Playlist as follows:

Lurker Of Chalice - S/T
Leviathan - Verrater
Throne Of Katarsis - Unholy Holocaustwinds
Funeral Mist - Devilry
Gorgoroth - Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam
Xasthur - Telepathic With The Deceased

And check out these Xasthur and Leviathan quotes. Very hatefilled and evil. Nice.

- Kato's stitches are out and she's looking good.

- I just got a new addition for my office, the holy grail of arcade machines.
