I might have mentioned it but Dillinger Escape Plan will be playing Slims in San Francisco as part of Noise Pop 2004. Relapse is set to release a 2 DVD set with live performances from their 2003 Contamination Festival. Dillinger will be included as well as sets from High On Fire, and Pig Destroyer.

Also, check out this vegan focused interview with Dillinger bassist Liam Wilson.

Stephen Baldwin is extreme. Yup, just check out the website for the new skateboarding / BMX / Jesus-pushing film Livin' It. Evangelism in the name of action sports. Great. There's some entertainting stuff in the FOX News spot when you click the 'Check Out The Trailer' text. I think my favorite is when Mr.Baldwin discusses finding Jesus after 9-11. After starting to say some silly stuff about the devil, he spits out,"God ALLOWED 9-11 to happen". That sounds pretty similiar to the shit Jerry Faldwell and Pat Robertson were spewing after the terrorist attacks. Cue the shot of a kid writing 'JESUS' on his grip tape.

I'm going to draw the Morbid Angel logo on my grip tape. You know, just to balance shit out.

Damn it. The Bronx have cancelled their show tomorrow night at Bottom of the Hill. According to their website, Matt was involved in a car accident and broke his nose, then got strep throat. Ouch. Still, it sucks that they will be out of comission and have no plans to reschedule in the Bay Area.

Check out their new video (14mgs) for 'False Alarm' and dig the crazy corpse paint.

Good day of tattooing yesterday.

I caught Coheed And Cambria at Bottom of the Hill last night...eh (insert shoulder shrug here). Really, the only thing they needed to do to impress me was to play a great live version of the title track of their newest album, In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth. Well, they opened with it. Musically, they were very tight...the guitar sound was great. I knew the question would be whether or not the unique lead vocal style of Claudio Sanchez would work live. The answer: not real well. It was OK, but the studio tweaks on the records were pretty obvious. They also didn't have too much energy on stage. But to be fair, I was very distracted by Sanchez's hair, even from the back of the club (is that shit natural? could he ever find a hat that would fit over it? my God, push it out of your face!). I also have to mention that the crowd keep chanting for the band to play Iron Maiden's 'The Trooper'. I can't remeber ever going to a show and hearing so many people passionately request a cover song. Odd. I left before they played it. If you're interested, they play again tonight and tickets are still available.

Lots going on.

I finally caught 'The Return of the King' on Saturday night. What took me so long? To be honest after sitting through the two hours and forty five minutes of torture that was Cold Mountain, I was a tad frightened of three hours and forty five minutes of ANY movie. Of course, I was wrong to wait...it was fantastic. The battle scenes were epic indeed.

If you dig Darkest Hour, try The Black Dahlia Murder. It's a bit more death metal than Swedish metal, but it's quality stuff. I myself have been listening to a great deal of King Diamond lately.

Oh, in case you didn't know, buying a home in San Francisco is quite the task.

I'm happy to live in California. My Parents = 14°F feels like 5°F (with 5" of snow). My Brother = 5°F feels like -14°F!!! Screw that

I stumbled across these great show reviews from the 80's LA punk and new wave scene. Some of these shows are true pieces of music history. Lucky bastards. Good reading.

In keeping with the metal theme this week...
I finally got my hands on the full length Probot release. For those who haven't heard, this is Dave Grohl's all metal fantasy camp. He wrote and performed a variety of underground metal songs and then scored a who's who of metal greats to lend their vocals to each track. I have to say...it's fucking good. Some tracks are true standouts (Centuries Of Sin' with Cronos of Venom, 'Shake Your Blood' with Lemmy of Motorhead, and 'Big Sky' with Tom G. Warrior of Celtic Frost are topping my list right now) and you really can't beat the variety in the vocal line up Grohl scored. To top it all off he's filmed a video for 'Shake Your Blood' featuring Lemmy and dancing Suicide Girls. Can't wait to see that...it's like he read my mind.

Incredible.
Rarely does a live band completely floor me from the first song. Yesterday, 3 Inches of Blood had me after the first minute of 'Curse of the Lighthouse Keeper'. I have been listening to the three MP3s they have posted on their site for a while now, and mentioned them a few months back on the site. While I was really impressed with the songs, their live sound is just unreal. Dualing guitars, and the power of dual vocalists as well. Cam Pipes' (yup, that's his name) high notes and metal screams were peeling the paint. This is the shit. It was funny to see the trendy crowd at Milk just stare in slack-jawed awe. If you've ever enjoyed metal, or anything close to it...try to catch these guys live. I'm only sorry I didn't catch their other show in SF earlier this week at The Pound. 'Raise your fists to the sky...heavy metal will never die'. (Lambgoat has a review of ther full length posted here)

l Wednesday - January 7 - 9:51am l

I had a dream last night that Ian Mackaye was telling me that the first time Minor Threat performed their song 'Filler' the kids at the show thought he was saying 'Thriller' and somehow insulting Michael Jackson in the lyrics. (I woke up and quickly figured out 'Filler' was released in 1981 (on their self titled 7"), and the Jacko 'Thriller' LP hit the shelves in 1982).

Celebrity Poker Showdown champ David Cross was damn funny at Cobbs on Saturday night. Opener Patton Oswald was funnier.

Go read Bob's recent entry regarding Bush's Intelligence Authorization Act. Then think about the fact that Bush is going into this election year with $99 million dollars in the bank. 'We're fucked' indeed.

This site is really starting to bore me. Thank goodness I'm starting a new project soon. Listen + Dead Low Tide - S/T

I wanted to find out a bit more on the news story I posted yesterday...so here are a few other links:

Man Sentenced for 'Burning Bush' Comment - good overview and details

No Laughing Matter

Yes, the guy changed his name to Israel Humphreys, was arrested 25 previous times, and represented himself...but it still blows me away that this case was brought to trial and a jury found him guilty. It also seems he was found mentally unfit to stand trial...but was found guilty anyway? What the? It just all seems pretty wrong.

l Friday - January 2 - 10:32am l

Welcome to 2004. And now the news...

Not sure where I first heard about this, but it's just fucking unbelievable!

'Humphreys said he got into a barroom discussion with a truck driver a day before Bush's visit. A bartender who overheard the conversation told police that Humphreys talked about a "burning Bush" and the possibility of someone setting Bush ablaze.'

'Richard Humphreys, 51, was convicted in 2002 of threatening to kill or harm the president. He appealed, arguing his comment was a prophecy protected under his right of free speech. '

This guy mentioned burning up Bush and is now serving a three year prision sentence!!!? Jesus, from what I've mentioned on my site in the past year I could be hauled off and locked up. What the hell is going on in this country? Is anyone paying attention? I don't even know what to say...
