On July 20, 2002 my father and I drove, qualified, and raced 15 laps at Altamont Speedway in Cam Cars during a main event NASCAR event.

Let me start by saying this was hardcore. No mini-putt go-carts here...

Yes, we did race in real cars (with speeds around 70 mph on the small oval track), and yes…it was on a real track in front of 500 NASCAR fans. It was a bit terrifying to hear the guys in charge say that we could lose limbs, snap our necks, or flip the car at any moment. I put on my fire-proof suit not knowing how far I would get before I spun out, hit the wall and my head popped off my spine (that’s what happened to Dale Earnhardt, they explained in great detail). My Dad and I strapped into our race harnesses and drove through the pits as the other REAL racers stopped to watch us roll by.

To try to describe driving would be too difficult...but it was amazing. Trying to stay in control at 70mph going into a tight left turn while hot tire rubber bounces off the plexi-glass windshield is something you have to feel.

During the qualifier, one car spun out in the grass. Not too bad. the fianl race was a bit insane. My Dad almost T-Boned a spun car, and I missed a car spun completely 180 and smoking by inches. We were told we put on a good show for the crowd...as near misses and crashes were very popular. Great.

I qualified 5 of 8, my Dad 4. After the 15 laps main event I grabbed 4th overall and my father 5th. The top three spots went to drivers who had raced Cam Cars before.

If you want more insane details or info on how you can contact the event manager (it's not easy), drop me an email.
